You do not need a full bag refit every time a new model year drops. You do need one when your body, swing, or goals have moved — or when your current clubs are fighting you.
Clear signals it is time
- Your miss has changed (new slice, new hook, thin/fat pattern)
- Swing speed is up or down by a meaningful amount after lessons, gym work, or age
- You changed your attack angle or ball position after coaching
- Irons are inconsistent in distance gapping (big holes or overlaps)
- You bought clubs off the rack years ago and never confirmed lie or length
- Pain or mobility limits how you load the club
Signals you can wait
- You are mid-lesson block and your coach expects another swing change soon
- You just want the newest head for looks, and your current numbers are solid
- Budget is tight and only one club is the problem — start with that club
A smart sequence
1. Confirm the problem with a few monitored sessions or a lesson review.
2. Fit the club that hurts most (often driver or scoring irons).
3. Check gapping before replacing the whole set.
4. Build or buy only what the data supports.
Fitting is maintenance for serious golfers — like a club fitting physical. Do it when something changed, not because a catalog said so.
